Switch Locks

Capitol Industries Inc. manufactures and supplies a portfolio of security products unmatched by any other Canadian company. Our lineup includes a broad selection of cam locks, in addition to drawer, sliding-door, magnetic, letterbox, and cabinet locks, as well as padlocks. Yet another specialty of ours is switch locks. We offer three distinct series of these locking units, each one with a different kind of terminal and three different designs.

Also known as key switches or key-operated switches, switch locks are devices through which turning a key operates an electrical switch. These locks are usually used in cases in which access to a switch function needs to be restricted, for either safety or security reasons. Common examples include charging units for electric carts, industrial machinery, elevator control panels, and fire or burglar alarm panels.

To comply with international safety standards – including the CE regulations in the European Union – key switches are always rated at fewer than 50 volts for alternating current (AC) and under 75 volts for direct current (DC). Some locks are patented to make unauthorized key duplication close to impossible.

The three series of switch locks available from Capitol Industries are the S2D Series (Solder Terminal), the S2DQ Series (Spade Terminal), and the S2DS Series (Screw Terminal). Each of these series includes three designs of locks: one-position key removal, two-position key removal, and spring-back momentary contact. Each switch lock comes with a chrome finish, and the numbering is key blank standard. Keying specifications for these locks include the following:

  • 1137S steel tubular key blank;
  • up to 60,000 combinations;
  • seven brass pins; and
  • keyed alike (KA) or different (KD).

Each of our switch locks measures 22 millimetres (mm) in diameter at the key end and 18.85 by 16.6 mm at the plug end; the total length of each one, not counting the plug, measures 37½ mm. The plug can measure 12.8 mm or 6½ mm, depending on the model.

Customers are encouraged to get in touch with us to find out more about these locks – and about the many other locking products we offer.
