Core plugs
Core plugs, also known as frost plugs or freeze plugs, are typically used to fill the sand casting core holes on engine blocks and cylinder heads. Sand cores are used to cast the internal cavities such as coolant passages in water-cooled engines. These holes are designed to allow the sand core to be removed after casting is complete. Often they are made from thin metal alloys, rubber, as well as a range of other materials.
Quality core plugs are an important part of ensuring cooling systems remain leak free for many years. When proper engine coolant maintenance is neglected, core plugs are usually among the first components to begin leaking.
