Carburizing Service

When you want your productivity and performance to heat up to new profit heights look to A&M Heat Treating Ltd for your entire materials surface heating needs. A&M’s carburizing process adds carbon to the surface of steel to harden the metal effectively for long lasting results that will stand the test of time and pressure loads. Adding carbon to the surface heats the metallic surface below its melting point in contact with carbonaceous solids, liquids, or gases forming. High gas composition for top quality treatment low-carbon work pieces are required during the process. The hardness produced largely results in a maximum depth of 0.25 inches (6.4mm). We use a high ambient gas composition and a very carefully controlled furnace temperature in our process as not to overheat and impact the microstructural integrity of the rest of the metal material components at the core. In contrast, vacuum hardening and vacuum tempering systems are also used for greater precision in the heat-treating process at our facilities. This process also has the benefit of being an effective remedy for undesired decarburizing that may occur right after the product manufacturing process.

Exceptional vacuum heating process
Vacuum carburizing also has an added ecological benefit that many are unaware of such as automated start-up and shut down procedures and can reduce energy consumption in the process. Characteristic of the vacuum process is also a higher carbon-mass flow rate, allowing the highest temperatures possible to be used, so the process cycling time is often drastically reduced. Thermal decomposition during the process uses the carbonizing gases of methane, propane and acetylene usually at 92%. Small quantities of these carburizing gases are used in the hot zone of our machinery, carefully controlled and later turned off by the vacuum pumps. One of the biggest benefits is bigger case depth and uniformity. The absence of oxygen in the process also enhances the quality and core properties for greater durability and is generally considered to be a superior process than those relying upon atmospheric conditions.
