Ceramic Machining

At Astro Met, Inc. our advanced ceramics manufacturing team works with a variety of ceramic materials. We’ve been manufacturing advanced ceramic materials and components for more than 50 years. We use these materials to make the components you require. We have worked with private industries and government agencies. We can solve your company’s advanced ceramics needs.

Product lines

Our machines work with the ceramic materials we produce ourselves: Amalox 68 alumina, Amalox 87 alumina, AmZirox 86 zirconia and ZTA-96 zirconia toughened alumina. But we also work with advanced ceramic materials our customers supply.

We provide different finishing and capability.  Our machines are equipped to do various types of grinding: ID, OD, surface, form, and jig grinding. We also do diamond core drilling and ultrasonic machining. Our machines can also do all forms of lapping and polishing. These processes are often used when surface finish and geometry need to be tightly controlled. These processes can provide tolerances to 0.0001 inches.

Industries served

Our advanced ceramic materials can be used in virtually every industry including: chemical processing, metal fabrication and automotive. We can also work in the aerospace, food processing and medical industries. Our company has also served government agencies, including NASA.

Manufacturing process

Our machines work with green machined, as-fired and finish machined advanced ceramic components. We use conventional milling, lathe, sawing and grinding processes for green machining in the soft chalk-like state.  Diamond grinding wheels are used for finish grinding to precision      tolerance.

Customers can use the green, machined as-fired components the way they receive them. They can also use them as blanks. Precision grind shops across the world use our as-fired alumina and zirconia blanks. These blanks are green machined to near-net shape and size. This saves money because these blanks need less finish grinding.

Manufacturers

Our company distributes Macor, a machinable glass ceramic, made by Corning Inc. This ceramic material is available in rod, bar and sheet stock shapes. It can also be used to manufacture custom precision parts.
